Perry R. Rice, age 67, of Xenia, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026, at St. Leonard Care Center. Perry was born on August 16, 1959, in Japan, where his parents, Martha (Lucy) Rice and Paul R. Rice, were stationed at the time.

He graduated from Springfield Catholic Central High School and Wright State University. After working briefly as a civilian at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Perry continued his education at the University of Arkansas, where he earned his PhD and where he met fellow student Jan M. Yarrison. The two were married on December 29, 1984.

Perry went on to become a longtime professor of physics at Miami University, where he shared his curiosity, knowledge, and passion with generations of students. He also authored two bookson quantum optics.

Outside the classroom, Perry was a lifelong Grateful Dead fan and an accomplished electric guitarist. He regularly hosted jam sessions at his home, bringing friends together to play, write music, and enjoy one another’s company. He was also a devoted Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Reds fan.

Through both education and music, Perry touched countless lives, expanded minds, and created lasting connections.

A celebration of Perry’s life, featuring reflections from family and friends, will be held on Sunday, November 22, 1pm, at BASH by Young + Wild,  679 N. High St., Suite B, Worthington, Ohio 43085. Refreshments will follow, and the evening will conclude with one final jam session in honor of Perry and his magnificent love of music.
